Process Profile

These ceramics are made using the method of Raku pit firing in which the pots are placed into a pit dug out from the earth alongside various materials which are all then set alight using wood and paper in a sort of bonfire set up which then creates random and unpredictable patterns on the surface of the pots. Burning natural materials along side the pots is what creates the result of the markings, blocks of colour and surface texture.

Colour guide to materials used:

Rusty Red/ Orange - Powdered iron oxide
Black/ charcoal- Layers of sawdust
Speckled black/blue texture- Salt that is dusted around the pots before the fire is lit
Scorched lines, marks- Copper wire

Due to the flaws, unpredictability and ferociousness of the final firing process, certain pieces become damaged and broken in consequence.
Throughout every stage of the ceramic’s creation, they have been met with a level of care and cherished attention along with delicate handling to keep them whole. Now fragmented, this level of care shouldn’t lessen nor should the ceramic pieces thrown away. They still carry the potential for function which shouldn’t be neglected.
Damaged, scarred, vulnerable but perfect on an individualistic measure, each piece is treated with valued time to a period of restoration and preservation to highlight these flaws and cracked imperfections.

Kintsugi is a Japanese method for repairing ceramics. It uses the materials of lacquer, made from tree sap, and powdered precious metals such as gold, silver or platinum. It is a practice that symbolises a reconciliation with the flaws and accidents of time intended to reinforce some of the underlying themes in Japanese philosophy. It is used to render the fault lines and cracks to be beautiful and strong. The now glistening precious gold lines are there to emphasise a philosophical merit all of their own.

For these ceramics, lacquer and powered iron/ iron oxide are being used to highlight the cracks and breakages from the outcome of the firing process.

As I’m using the non-precious and ubiquitous metal of iron oxide, I’ve separated the applied technique on the pots from the traditional practice of Kintsugi (Kin: golden - Tsugi: Joinery. To join with gold), it can only be referred to as ‘Kintsugi style’.

However, I’ve chosen to use this metal as iron has a significance to these ceramics. The earth in which they were fired has a high concentration of iron. The soil is made up mainly of sand and with the metal content running through it, this makes the perfect environment to withstand and incubate the heat needed for the firing process to create the intricate patterns on the pot’s surface. This salient metal deserves an equal level of attention in the overall form as the outcome of the ceramic’s surface design is so reliant on its existence in the soil.
